The big question is: How do we raise a new era of designers, confident and working hard to achieve unforeseen levels of the creative industry? How do we encourage individual identity over creative puppetry? And how do we teach design education that nurtures the person while cultivating high-level design?

“The graphic design industry is caught up in a vicious cycle of creating faceless designers, seen only for what they can offer and replaced in the blink of an eye. This is my journey to bring awareness to the lack of confidence that plagues designers— sharing my heart, research, and stories of those who are bringing change to an industry that so desperately needs it.”

ANALYSIS OF PROBLEM & OPPORTUNITY

The graphic design industry is caught up in a vicious cycle of creating faceless designers, seen only for what they can offer and replaced in the blink of an eye. Our industry prides itself on overstepping professionalism— squeezing the morale out of studio teams worldwide. With the stress of being replaced for not being good enough, graphic designers suffer under the heavy hand of impostor syndrome, burnout, and lack of confidence.

Where do we go from here? Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? Education is the foundation upon which confidence is born. When you are making educated decisions that are true to you— you are confident.

A confident designer creates with passion and excitement— dreaming up business strategies with award-winning visual language. A confident designer is proud of their work— signing their signature like an autograph. A confident designer is a problem solver— with zeal to help others. A confident designer understands their value separate from the skills and creativity they provide. A confident designer is inside each of us— waiting for the day you look your fear in the eye and say you’ve had enough. Confidence propels you forward and takes you places you could never imagine. I’m here to tell you that you are capable of so much more.

The big question is: How do we raise a new era of designers, confident and working hard to achieve unforeseen levels of the creative industry? How do we encourage individual identity over creative puppetry? And how do we teach design education that nurtures the person while cultivating high-level design?

These are the tough conversations of graphic design— we laugh and cry— discussing some of the most pivotal topics graphic designers face today. This is my journey to bring awareness to the lack of confidence that plagues designers— sharing my heart, research, and stories of those who are bringing change to an industry that so desperately needs it.
